Canada: Ottawa Adds $15 Million to Help Transit Systems Switch to Electric Buses

Friday, October 30, 2026 · World · GSM News

The Government of Canada announced on October 29 nearly $15 million in new funding through the Zero Emission Transit Fund for 15 projects across the country, helping communities replace bus fleets with cleaner electric buses and supporting electrification planning, charging infrastructure and worker training.

The projects span several provinces and one university: municipalities including Beaumont and Cochrane in Alberta; Kamloops and the District of North Vancouver in British Columbia; transit authorities in Quebec; and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, with individual awards ranging from about $85,000 to $4.8 million. Kamloops will develop a heavy-duty electric vehicle infrastructure master plan, while the North Vancouver school district will plan electric school bus procurement.

Gregor Robertson, the minister responsible for housing, infrastructure and communities, said investing in clean transit such as electric buses cuts emissions and operating costs while creating jobs. Mandy Gull-Masty, the minister for Indigenous and northern infrastructure, said the investments matter particularly for northern and remote communities.

The government said the Zero Emission Transit Fund, launched in 2021, has supported more than 180 projects with over $134.2 million in funding.
