UK: Lord Chancellor Campaigns at UN for British Candidate for International Court of Justice

The UK government said on October 29 that the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Alex Norris, is at the United Nations General Assembly this week campaigning for the United Kingdom's candidate for judge of the International Court of Justice, Professor Dapo Akande. The election takes place on November 3.
Akande is a professor of public international law at the University of Oxford. Norris said the ICJ is the cornerstone of the rules-based international order and that its judges' independence and integrity underpin its authority, describing Akande as one of the outstanding international lawyers of his generation, with experience advising governments on major international disputes and a deep understanding of the Court's judicial role.
In New York, Norris also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other diplomats to discuss funding for international tribunals, and reaffirmed the UK's opposition to sanctions against the International Criminal Court. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the ICJ's inaugural sitting at the Peace Palace in The Hague.
The International Court of Justice, seated at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Its 15 judges hear legal disputes between states and give advisory opinions on legal questions.
