Japan: Draft Resolution on a World Without Nuclear Weapons Backed by 150 Countries at UN

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on October 28 that Japan's draft resolution "Common steps towards a world without nuclear weapons" was adopted by the First Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on October 28, with 150 countries voting in favour, 7 against and 25 abstentions.

Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said the draft, submitted in the year of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, sets out concrete and realistic steps towards a world without nuclear weapons, including education on the consequences of nuclear weapons use and interaction between young people and decision-makers, and is designed to bridge divides between states.

Motegi said that, as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings in war, Japan has a responsibility to keep building trust between nuclear-weapon and non-nuclear-weapon states, and welcomed the broad support, including co-sponsorship by nuclear-weapon states.

The draft is expected to go to a plenary vote of the General Assembly in early December. Japan has submitted resolutions calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons to the General Assembly every year since 1994.
