Yellowstone Closes Most Roads and Three Entrances on November 1 for Winter: October 31 Is the Last Driving Day, Oversnow Season Begins December 15

Friday, October 30, 2026 · Culture & Tourism · GSM News

The National Park Service announced on October 21 that most roads at Yellowstone National Park, in and around Park County, Wyoming, along with the West, South and East entrances, will close to regular vehicle traffic on November 1 to prepare for winter operations. Saturday, October 31, will be the final day visitors can drive most of Yellowstone's roads in 2026.

The road from Tower Fall to Canyon Junction over Dunraven Pass will remain open through October 31, weather permitting. Visitors traveling by car in winter can access the park only via the road connecting the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana, which passes through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley and remains open year-round, weather permitting.

The snowmobile and snowcoach travel season begins on December 15. The Park Service advises fall and winter drivers to monitor changing weather, keep plans flexible, expect limited services, and pack blankets and other cold-weather essentials while keeping the gas tank full.

Current road conditions are available on the park roads webpage, by calling (307) 344-2117 for a recorded update, or by texting 82190 to 888-777 to sign up for Yellowstone road alerts. Communities surrounding Yellowstone remain open year-round and offer fall and winter recreation.
