Getty Foundation Launches 'New Interpretations' Global Initiative: $2.7 Million Pilot Round Backs 11 Museum Interpretation Projects

The Getty Foundation, based in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, announced on October 28 the launch of New Interpretations, a global initiative to advance how museums interpret their collections and exhibitions for visitors. A $2.7 million pilot round will fund 11 projects.
The grantees are the Walker Art Center; the Queens Museum; a collaboration between the Leeum Museum of Art and M+; Manchester Museum at the University of Manchester; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; the Fowler Museum at UCLA; the First Americans Museum; the Denver Art Museum; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI); and the Association for Art Museum Interpretation.
The projects take different directions: the Walker is expanding language access in Spanish, Hmong and Somali; ACMI, under chief executive Seb Chan, is exploring captioning and accessibility technology; the First Americans Museum pairs visitor research with Indigenous knowledge ahead of an exhibition marking the bicentennial of the Indian Removal Act; and the Denver Art Museum is convening visitor panels on 'humanness' in an age of super intelligence (SI).
Heather E. MacDonald, the Getty Foundation's senior program officer, said strong interpretation can determine whether a museum visit is quickly forgotten or genuinely rewarding. The grants will be offered annually and are open to museums and visual-arts nonprofits worldwide. Getty has supported museum interpretation since 1986.
