The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, has announced a $3,231,252 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's GEAR UP program to follow about 700 students from seventh grade through high school graduation over six years.

The students form a single cohort drawn from Limestone County and Marshall County. The grant runs from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2032, and is co-funded by UAH and the two county school systems.

The program will provide academic enrichment and tutoring, professional development for mathematics educators, college and career planning, financial literacy education, mentorship, campus visits, job shadowing and dual enrollment opportunities.

Participating schools are Ardmore High School, Clements High School, Elkmont High School, Tanner High School and West Limestone High School in Limestone County, and Asbury High School and Douglas Middle School in Marshall County.

The project is led by UAH Vice President Dr. Bryan Samuel, working with Limestone County Superintendent Dr. Randy Shearouse and Marshall County Superintendent Dr. Cindy L. Wigley, who said the program is designed to give rural students continuous college-going support starting in middle school. Research from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce projects that 85 percent of good jobs will require education or training beyond high school by 2031.
