Flash Floods Strike Las Vegas Valley: Three Swift-Water Rescues in Henderson, One Dead

A fast-moving thunderstorm system struck the Las Vegas Valley in Clark County, Nevada, around midday on October 30, triggering flash flood warnings across the Strip, downtown Las Vegas and Henderson. Fire crews in Henderson carried out three simultaneous swift-water rescues at about 1 p.m., pulling four people from floodwaters; one man rescued from a drainage wash went into cardiac arrest and died at a hospital, according to a city spokesperson.
Two of the rescues took place along Lake Mead Parkway, where floodwaters swept one vehicle off the roadway and left another driver stranded on a car roof. The storm also dropped hail as large as ping-pong balls, dumped an estimated 1.5 inches of rain on parts of east Henderson and forced the closure of Lake Mead Parkway east of Lake Las Vegas Parkway due to mud and debris.
Lightning prompted a ground stop at Harry Reid International Airport, and NV Energy reported more than 4,000 customers without power at the peak. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for much of the Southwest through Monday as another storm system approaches.
