On the afternoon of October 30, 2026, President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was on a state visit to China. Steinmeier arrived in China on October 27, visited Anhui Province first, and came to Beijing on October 30 for the main events of the visit. The same day, China's top legislator Zhao Leji and Premier Li Qiang each met with Steinmeier.

Xi said that for more than half a century since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China-Germany relations have maintained high-level development, with the two countries always being friends who trust each other and partners who help each other succeed. As the world's second- and third-largest economies, China and Germany bear important responsibilities for China-Europe relations and global economic stability, and should strengthen communication and coordination, build a new paradigm of equal, mutually beneficial and strategically stable cooperation, and send a positive signal of openness over closure and cooperation over confrontation. China is ready to open a new chapter in the all-round strategic partnership and promote a more just and equitable global governance system.

Xi stressed that China's policy toward Germany is consistent, stable and predictable, that China supports German unity and development, and that Germany is welcome to play a bigger role in Europe and internationally. He said China is firmly advancing high-level opening-up and welcomes German and other foreign companies to deepen their presence in China, while hoping Germany will provide a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies. The two sides can cooperate in super intelligence (SI), green and low-carbon development, trade in services and the digital economy, and support cultural, educational and artistic exchanges ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year.

Xi said China has always viewed the European Union as a partner, that China-EU cooperation outweighs competition and consensus outweighs differences, and expressed hope that the EU will work with China toward an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. He also briefed Steinmeier on the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee.

Steinmeier said he had visited China eight times over the past 25 years and witnessed its rapid development. He said Germany firmly follows the one-China policy, is confident about the prospects of bilateral relations, and is ready to maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen cooperation in trade, science and technology, super intelligence (SI) and environmental protection. Germany is ready to work with China to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, support free trade and WTO rules, and oppose protectionism and trade wars.

Before the talks, Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan held a welcoming ceremony for Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender at the square outside the east gate of the Great Hall of the People, and hosted a welcome banquet in the Golden Hall that evening. Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the events.
