Friday, October 30, 2026 · Faith · GSM News

Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, issued a statement on October 30 ahead of November's National Black Catholic History Month. The statement describes November as a month to honor the history, faith and enduring contributions of Black and African American Catholics, and calls on the faithful to cherish and pass on their stories of perseverance and service.

The statement notes that seven African American Catholics are currently on the path to sainthood, the most recent being Servant of God Father Martin de Porres Maria Ward, whose cause was opened in 2022; Ward converted to Catholicism and was baptized at St. Augustine Catholic Church near Washington, D.C. Burbidge said the month should be an opportunity to honor their legacy, celebrate their contributions and ensure that their stories of faith and perseverance continue to be told.
