New York State Police to Take Over Criminal Investigations of Sexual Assault Complaints at Cornell Under Oct. 29 Agreement Announced by Governor Hochul

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on October 29 that the New York State Police will take over criminal investigations of sexual assault complaints at Cornell University in Ithaca, Tompkins County, under an agreement signed with the university. Going forward, sexual assault complaints made on campus will be referred to the state police for criminal investigation unless the complainant asks otherwise; such complaints were previously generally handled by campus police.
The decision follows an allegation by a woman identified as Jane Doe, who said in a civil lawsuit filed this year that she was assaulted at a fraternity house on campus in October 2024. Although the university expelled or disciplined the accused student, no criminal charges were filed, drawing student criticism. The governor's office had previously appointed a special prosecutor to re-examine older cases.
