Folk Artist Clementine Hunter Exhibition Opens at Alexandria Museum of Art in Louisiana; Free Admission Oct. 31-Nov. 1

The Alexandria Museum of Art in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, opened an exhibition devoted to Clementine Hunter on October 30, with free admission on October 31 and November 1. Hunter, a self-taught folk artist born on a Louisiana plantation in 1887, spent her life depicting African American rural life: picking cotton, baptisms, funerals and dances.
Hunter's work is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the American Folk Art Museum, and as one of Louisiana's most celebrated self-taught artists, her influence on understandings of African and French-Creole culture in the state continues to grow.
