University of Central Oklahoma Wins Approval for Its First-Ever Doctoral Program in 136 Years: PhD in Applied Science with Biology, Computer Science and Engineering Tracks

The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma County, has reached a milestone in its 136-year history: the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education unanimously approved the university's first doctoral program at their October meeting, with the news announced October 29-30. The new degree is a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Science with three tracks -- biology, computer science and engineering -- and still awaits review by the university's accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission.
The university said the approval also supports its goal of reaching R2 research-university status by 2032 under the Carnegie classification of research activity. UCO had never offered a doctoral degree in its 136 years, and officials called the breakthrough a key step in building research capacity.
