Massachusetts Attorney General Awards Over $625,000 to 17 School Districts for Phone-Free Learning

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell's office announced on October 30 that it has awarded more than $625,000 to 17 school districts statewide to strengthen phone-free learning environments.
The awards come from the Phone Free School Support Grant, launched by the Attorney General's Office in May for public schools, charter schools and educational collaboratives. Awards are based on student enrollment, up to $50,000 per district; recipients include Amesbury Public Schools, Quincy Public Schools and New Bedford Public Schools among the 17 districts.
The office said funds may be used for phone storage solutions, device-access limiting technology, staff training and community education. 'Young people are facing a mental health crisis driven in large part by the constant use of their cellphones and social media. During the school day, kids deserve to be able to set those distractions aside and focus on learning and building relationships with their peers,' Campbell said.
