Charlotte City Council Extends Data Center Moratorium Through October 18, 2027

The Charlotte City Council voted unanimously on October 26 to extend the city's temporary moratorium on new data center development by 12 months, through October 18, 2027, local reports on October 30 said.
The original 150-day moratorium took effect on June 8 and had been set to expire on November 5, 2026; the extension gives the city nearly 11 additional months to study the potential impacts of data centers and develop future regulations. During the moratorium, the city has paused accepting, processing and approving applications for new telecommunications and data storage facilities within Charlotte and its jurisdiction.
The city has commissioned research from the World Resources Institute, convened a 19-member community task force and conducted public engagement. The council stressed that extending the moratorium does not amount to a permanent ban and does not prejudge future rules; data centers' water and electricity use and land impacts are central topics of the review.
