Chicago Business Barometer Slips to 55.3 in October, Still Expanding; Prices Paid Hit Highest Since December 2021

Chicago-area business activity expanded at a slower pace in October while remaining in growth territory, data released on October 30 showed. The Chicago Business Barometer, compiled by MNI Indicators, fell to 55.3 in October from 58.8 in September, below the 56.0 economists had expected; readings above 50 signal expansion.
The decline was driven by decreases in supplier deliveries, production, order backlogs and new orders, and was partially offset by an increase in employment. The prices paid measure rose 8.9 points to its highest level since December 2021, and for the eighth consecutive month no respondents reported lower prices paid.
