Detroit Chinese American Author Curtis Chin Shares Chinese Restaurant Memories in Madison Heights

The Association of Chinese Americans hosted 'An Evening with Curtis Chin' on October 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at its Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights, Michigan, on the themes of identity, community and resilience. The event, hosted by the association's Teen Volunteer Council, was a Great Michigan Read partner program.
Detroit-born author Curtis Chin grew up in his family's Chung's Cantonese Cuisine, a longtime restaurant in Detroit's historic Chinatown; his memoir 'Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant' tells that story. The book was named an American Library Association Stonewall Honor Book and a 2024 Michigan Notable Book. Chin, a University of Michigan graduate, co-founded the Asian American Writers' Workshop in New York and served as its first executive director.
Organizers stressed that this is a Detroit story, not a New York or San Francisco one, meant to bring the history of Detroit's Chinese community — once a center of Chinese life and business in the city — back into public view.
