Friday, October 30, 2026 · Society · GSM News

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday, October 30, because of thunderstorms over the Phoenix metro area. The ground stop took effect at 11 a.m. and lasted at least through noon, with average delays of up to about 60 minutes.

After the ground stop expired, departure delays continued, disrupting Halloween weekend travel. As of 1:45 p.m., flight-tracking site FlightAware showed 4 cancellations and 478 delays at the airport, more than 400 affected flights in total. The figures are a mid-afternoon snapshot, not full-day totals.

The National Weather Service forecast a 90% chance of precipitation for the Phoenix metro, with rainfall of up to 0.75 inches possible and flood watches in effect for Friday and Saturday. Sky Harbor is Arizona's busiest airport and a major hub in the U.S. Southwest.
