Indiana Governor Braun Directs Regulators to Speed Up Utility Rate Reductions: Two Utilities Plan to Return More Than $116 Million

In Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, Governor Mike Braun on October 30 directed the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to expedite its review of utility filings that would lower rates, so that announced reductions reach household bills as quickly as possible. "When utilities come forward with proposals to lower rates, I want those savings getting into Hoosiers' pockets as quickly as possible," Braun said.
Indiana Michigan Power delivered two rate reductions in the first half of 2026 and announced on August 26 a proposal to deliver approximately $59 million in further customer bill reductions in 2027, while freezing residential rates for three consecutive years; the company estimates a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month would save about $100 a year.
Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) announced on October 28 that it plans to return $57.5 million in new revenue from data center development directly to its existing electricity customers: residential customers would receive about $90 in bill credits over 18 months, roughly $5 a month, expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, subject to IURC approval. The state said specific reductions and effective dates remain subject to case-by-case approval by the commission.
