Follow-Up: Germany Flash Inflation Eases to 2.8% in October as Energy Gains Slow and Core Rate Falls to 2.1%

Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) released its flash estimate for October inflation on October 30: the consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.8% from a year earlier, down from 3.3% in September and below market expectations of around 3.0%, while consumer prices fell 0.2% from the previous month. GSM reported earlier on Friday that flash readings from Germany's major states had eased across the board, and the national figure is consistent with those state-level readings.
The slowdown was driven mainly by energy. Energy prices were up 12.2% on the year, a slower pace than September's 14.9%, and core inflation excluding food and energy eased to 2.1% from 2.4% in September. Food prices rose just 0.4% on the year, unchanged from September.
By component, services prices rose 2.5% on the year, down from 2.7% in September, while goods prices rose 3.0%, down from 3.8%, making goods the main source of the overall easing.
The harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), calculated for euro-area comparison, also rose 2.8% on the year and fell 0.1% on the month. Destatis said all figures are provisional and that final October results will be released on November 11. The full release is available from Destatis, inflation rate of +2.8% expected in October 2026 (press release No. 382).
