San Bernardino County Confirms First Pediatric Flu Death of the Season: Child Was Too Young to Be Vaccinated

Friday, October 30, 2026 · California · GSM News

The Public Health Department of San Bernardino County, California, confirmed on October 30 the county's first pediatric influenza-related death of the 2026-27 flu season. County officials said the child had underlying medical conditions and was too young to have received the flu vaccine.

County Health Officer Dr. Sharon Wang said in a statement: "Our deepest condolences go out to the family. Losing a child to flu is a devastating reminder of how serious respiratory viruses can be, especially for our youngest and most vulnerable residents." She added: "While this child was too young to be vaccinated, we can all help protect those who cannot receive the flu vaccine by staying up to date on our own vaccinations and taking steps to reduce the spread of illness."

The department said flu and flu-like illness activity in the county is rising earlier in the season than expected and remains under monitoring. By comparison, the county's first pediatric flu death of the previous season was reported in February 2026. Flu season typically runs from November 1 to April 30, with emergency room visits for flu-like symptoms usually peaking between December and February.

Officials said an annual flu shot is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older, and that infants, pregnant people, older adults and those with chronic medical conditions face a higher risk of severe illness. The California Department of Public Health also recommends vaccination against flu, respiratory syncytial virus and COVID-19. Warning signs listed by the county include trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or face and dehydration, which call for immediate medical attention. Residents can book vaccinations through health care providers, pharmacies or the state's vaccine appointment portal; the county Public Health Communicable Disease Section can be reached at 800-722-4794.
