Tonight 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.: DUI Checkpoint in Mission Viejo, Orange County; Laguna Hills Traffic Safety Operation Follows Saturday

The Orange County Sheriff's Department announced on October 28, 2026, that it will conduct a DUI/driver's license checkpoint on Friday, October 30, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city of Mission Viejo, in Orange County, California.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests. Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment and will check drivers for proper licensing.
The Sheriff's Department reminds drivers that 'DUI doesn't just mean booze.' Prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, can impair a driver enough to result in a DUI, and marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.
The department offers these reminders for a safe Halloween weekend: always use a designated sober driver, ride-share, cab, or public transportation to get home; if you see someone who is clearly impaired try to drive, take the keys and help them make other arrangements; report drunk drivers by calling 911; and if you are hosting a party, offer nonalcoholic drinks and monitor who is drinking and how they are getting home.
Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of an arrest to be upwards of $13,500, including fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses, not to mention possible jail time.
Separately, the Sheriff's Department announced on October 29 that it will conduct a traffic safety operation on Saturday, October 31, in the city of Laguna Hills, focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put people biking or walking at risk, including speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to bicyclists or pedestrians, and failing to stop for signs and signals. 'Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another,' Sergeant K. Ishii said.
Funding for both the checkpoint and the operation is provided by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
