Up to $50,000 a Year for Three Years: Iowa Opens Homeless Student District Subgrant Applications, Deadline December 31

Friday, October 30, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The Iowa Department of Education announced that the latest round of the Iowa Education of Homeless Children and Youth competitive subgrant is now open, offering support to Iowa public school districts with 10 or more students experiencing homelessness. The deadline to apply is December 31.

The subgrant is authorized under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Improvements Act of 2001 and is 100 percent federally funded. It offers funding for a three-year period starting July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2030, depending on the availability of funding. Because federal funding is limited, awards are divided into two tiers: districts reporting 10 to 50 students experiencing homelessness may receive up to $25,000 for each subgrant year, while districts reporting 51 or more students may receive up to $50,000 per year.

Approved activities may include tutoring, supplemental instruction and enriched educational services, evaluations of student strengths and needs, professional development for educators and staff, referral services, and transportation assistance. The department said the funding helps districts expand services for children and youth in need, build staff awareness of how to identify students who may be homeless, and increase opportunities for academic success.

Iowa school districts serve as critical hubs for resources, support and understanding for children and youth facing homelessness, said Tyler Navin, homeless education program consultant at the Iowa Department of Education. He said the subgrant can help districts establish programs and services that support students in challenging times and ensure they have opportunities for learning and success.

Eligible districts are those that identified and reported a minimum of 10 students experiencing homelessness on Student Reporting in Iowa during the 2025-26 school year. Applications are submitted through the Consolidated Accountability and Support Application (CASA), and details are available on the department's McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Resources webpage.
