Edison International Warns in Q3 Report That Wildfire Reform Delays Carry Rising Costs; $1.8 Billion in Eaton Fire Losses Recorded

CALIFORNIA — Edison International, parent of Southern California Edison (SCE), warned that delays in California wildfire liability reform are having "dire and escalating" impacts, according to Utility Dive's report on the company's third-quarter earnings call and its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. President and CEO Pedro Pizarro said on the call, disclosed October 30, that the Legislature ended its session without passing comprehensive wildfire reform, and the company continues to call for a special session, a long-term claims funding source not dependent on the Wildfire Fund, and a true shareholder liability cap. He noted that November 15 is the constitutional deadline to send bills to the governor this session, and that if the effort fails in 2026 it must continue in 2027 with a new governor and Legislature.
As of September 30, 2026, SCE had recorded $1.8 billion in losses related to Eaton Fire settlements, with expected recoveries of $917 million from customer-funded self-insurance, $859 million from the Wildfire Fund and $70 million through FERC electric rates. Edison International and SCE face about 38,000 plaintiffs in roughly 2,000 Eaton Fire lawsuits. The company's 2026–2030 capital plan totals $38 billion to $41 billion.
