Detroit-Style Pizza Chain Square Pie Guys to Close Palo Alto Store in Santa Clara County, California, on Oct. 30: First Closure After Just One Year

On October 29, 2026, the New York Post reported that Square Pie Guys, the Detroit-style pizza chain in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California, will close its Palo Alto restaurant on Friday, October 30 — the brand's first closure since its founding, after the store had been open only about a year. Founder and owner Marc Schechter said in a video that the decision was not made lightly; he said he was upset by the outcome and apologized to customers, saying he felt the business had let a lot of people down. Lunch orders at the store had remained stable, but dinner and weekends were always slow; the storefront sits on a section of street closed to car traffic, making parking and access a challenge and adding to the pressure. One customer commented on the video that they had ordered pickup only once and that accessibility and parking were a challenge with the closed-off street. Square Pie Guys is credited with starting the Detroit-style pizza craze in the Bay Area; it opened its first brick-and-mortar location in San Francisco's SoMa district in 2019 and has expanded to 6 storefronts, the most recent in Walnut Creek in December. Schechter said he still has expansion plans; he and co-author Gabi Moskowitz have just released his debut cookbook, "Square Pie Guy," and he teased that a new location is in the works but will not be in the South Bay, adding that he would be open to returning to Palo Alto in the future.
