Calimesa Gets Its First Imported Water as Seven-Acre Recharge Basin Is Completed

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · California · GSM News

Water supply reliability took a step forward for the Calimesa area in Riverside County, California, with the completion of the County Line Road groundwater recharge basin, celebrated by the partner agencies in mid-October. It is the first time imported water has reached the Calimesa area through the State Water Project system.

The seven-acre basin and its turnout connect to the East Branch Extension of the State Water Project and a repurposed pipeline, diverting imported water into the basin to percolate down and replenish the Yucaipa Subbasin. At full operation it can recharge up to 479 million gallons a year, supporting water security for about 18,000 residents in the Calimesa area.

The project cost $6.2 million, including $3.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding arranged through the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, and was built with the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency, the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District and the South Mesa Water Company. Construction took about 12 months, and local water officials say it marks the first delivery of State Water Project water to Calimesa's doorstep.
