Long Beach Asks Residents to Weigh In on Renaming City Sites Honoring César Chávez

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · California · GSM News

The City of Long Beach, in Los Angeles County, California, announced on October 29 that it is asking residents to weigh in on renaming city sites and events that honor the late labor leader César Chávez. The discussion follows sexual abuse allegations against Chávez that surfaced earlier this year.

Five names are under review: César E. Chávez Park, the Drake Chavez Soccer Fields, the Drake Chavez Greenbelt, the Drake Chavez Connection, and César Chávez Observance Day. The city said the engagement sessions will be spaces for connection, reflection and healing, where community members can share their experiences, perspectives and recommendations. Chávez Elementary School is a Long Beach Unified School District asset and will be renamed through a separate process run by the district with the city's Office of Equity.

Sessions include a virtual community meeting on Thursday, November 5, at 5:30 p.m. The city said it will gather residents' input before deciding on replacement names for the sites and the observance day.
