UNHCR: $50 Million Winter Appeal Launched to Help Nine Million People in Four Countries

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · World · GSM News

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) launched a $50 million winter appeal on October 30 to help nine million people survive the cold months across Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria and Lebanon.

UNHCR said the money translates into tangible help: a heater, blankets, warm clothes, cash for fuel, or tarpaulin and tape to repair a blown-out window. Dominique Hyde of UNHCR said that for some families it may mean avoiding debt or keeping children in school.

In Dnipro, Ukraine, a resident named Svetlana grabbed her son and ran to the basement moments before a drone strike heavily damaged her apartment last winter; when they emerged, they no longer had anywhere to live.

In Afghanistan, an estimated 6.5 million people have returned in recent years, most of them involuntarily, and many arrivals have very little and must rebuild their lives from scratch. In Syria, around 3.6 million refugees and internally displaced people have returned since December 2024, while 15.6 million people inside the country need humanitarian assistance; UNHCR repaired almost 5,000 homes in Syria last year.
