Culture: Walters Art Museum Opens Luxury & Loss on November 7: 94 Works in Feather, Shell, Tusk and Horn Question the Wildlife Cost

The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, will open the exhibition Luxury & Loss: Feather, Shell, Tusk, Horn on November 7. It runs through January 24, 2027, on the first floor of the museum's Centre Street Building. The museum is free year-round, and the exhibition carries no additional charge.
The exhibition presents 94 works drawn from the museum's Asian, European, American and African art collections, with additional loans from private and institutional lenders. It is organised around four luxury materials taken from animals: kingfisher feather, tortoiseshell, ivory and rhinoceros horn. Valued by elites for their rarity and the skill they demanded, all four were banned from use in art during the 20th century as the wildlife cost and environmental awareness grew.
Curated by Dany Chan, the museum's associate curator of Asian art, the exhibition is arranged by material and includes responses by contemporary artists to the relationship between people and nature. A free artist talk will be held on opening day, November 7, from 3 to 4 p.m., and a curator tour on December 6 at 2 p.m.
