Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida, announced on October 21 that its College of Nursing and Health Sciences has received two federal awards from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) totaling $5,169,169, the first HRSA funding in the university's history.

The Wildcat Nursing Student Success Project received $2,190,703 to build an educational pathway that runs from high school through completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing. Project RISE-RN received $2,978,466 to help working healthcare professionals continue their education and advance toward registered nursing; RISE-RN stands for Recruiting, Inspiring, Supporting, and Educating the Registered Nurse.

Separately, a $250,000 appropriation from the state of Florida will support the launch of a dual enrollment nursing program, allowing high school students to begin earning nursing credits before graduation.

The university reports that its nursing program ranks second among historically Black colleges and universities and that its graduates have achieved a 100 percent first-attempt pass rate on the national nursing licensure examination (NCLEX) for more than two years. The new funding is aimed at preparing more nurses to serve rural and medically underserved communities.
