Beverly Hills Police Urge a Sober Driver This Halloween: A Drunk-Driving Death Every 44 Minutes Nationwide in 2024

The police department of Beverly Hills, a city in Los Angeles County, California, issued a Halloween safety release on October 27: residents celebrating on October 31 who plan to drink should designate a sober driver in advance or plan a sober ride home by public transit, taxi or rideshare.
'Halloween should be full of treats, not tragedies,' Police Chief Max Subin said. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one person was killed every 44 minutes in a drunk-driving crash on U.S. roads in 2024, and 1,311 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities occurred on California roads that year; the department said seasonal festivities and late-night travel heighten the risk on Halloween night.
For drivers, the department advises following the speed limit, slowing down and watching for more foot traffic in residential neighborhoods, taking extra time to look for trick-or-treaters at intersections and when entering and exiting driveways, never driving distracted or impaired, and having a plan before drinking.
For parents, caregivers and trick-or-treaters, the advice is to make sure costumes fit to prevent trips and falls, decorate costumes and treat bags with reflective tape and use flashlights or glow sticks, walk on sidewalks when available, stick to familiar, well-lit routes, and look both ways before crossing.
The department said additional officers will be working during Halloween. The advisory is a free public notice.
