Follow-up: Fairfield Mall Shooting Leaves 1 Dead and 6 Injured, 3 in Critical Condition
FAIRFIELD, California — A shooting broke out at about 8:30 p.m. on October 30 inside the Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center, a mall in Fairfield, a city in Solano County, California. At a press conference that night, Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall released the first confirmed casualty figures: one person was pronounced dead at the scene, and six others were taken to a hospital, three of them in critical condition.
The figures were formally released at the police media briefing held at about 11:30 p.m. that night. Xinhua, also citing local police, reported the same day that the mall shooting had killed one person and injured six others. In the first hours after the shooting, police had confirmed only that they were working an active incident with multiple people hurt, without releasing an exact count.
In a press release, police said: "This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting." Police did not reveal any description of the suspected shooter and did not confirm whether there was more than one suspect. A motive behind the shooting was not revealed.
The temporary Halloween store was open and filled with customers when the shooting began. One witness told KCRA that his wife heard shots inside the store as people ran, yelled and cried, and another witness said roughly seven shots were heard.
The Spirit Halloween store occupies the space once held by Best Buy at Solano Town Center, which is located at 1350 Travis Boulevard and holds approximately 130 stores. After the shooting, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and police departments from neighboring cities responded through mutual aid, and officers swept and cleared the mall.
As of publication, the victims had not been publicly identified, the suspect remained under investigation, and the case remained active.
