Florida Teen, 16, Shot by Homeowner during Halloween Door-Kicking Prank in Davie: Parents Say Homeowner Should Be Arrested

At about 11 p.m. on Halloween night, October 31, a 16-year-old boy in the Shenandoah area of Davie, in Broward County, Florida, was shot by a homeowner after he and friends went around kicking doors and running away as a prank. The teen was hit twice in the arm, rushed to the hospital and was in stable condition. The homeowner has not been arrested.
The teen's stepfather told reporters the group had been playing "doorbell ditching," repeatedly kicking a door and running away, when the homeowner came out, "chased them down the street" and fired two shots, both striking the boy in the arm. His mother said he underwent a major operation earlier this week, in which doctors "opened the whole arm." WSVN reported a large police presence afterwards in the 14300 block of Southwest 20th Street.
The Davie Police Department told the Daily Mail on November 3 that the shooting was being actively investigated and that no additional information could be released. Neither the homeowner nor the teen has been publicly identified. The teen's parents say the homeowner should be arrested.
The prank, known online as the "door kick challenge," has repeatedly surfaced on short-video platforms: participants kick a resident's front door as hard as they can, run away and film it, mimicking a home invasion. Police in several states issued warnings before Halloween. Merriam, Kansas, police called it a "reckless TikTok challenge," and Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood warned: "Somebody is going to get killed. This isn't funny." Police generally urge residents not to chase anyone and to call 911 instead.
