Southwest Says It Will Not Fly to McKinney: Dallas's Third Airport Opens in Mid-November With Avelo as Its Only Airline

Dallas, Dallas County, Texas: Southwest Airlines chief executive Bob Jordan said on October 31 that Southwest will not operate flights at McKinney National Airport, Dallas's third airport, telling WFAA the numbers 'didn't really work' and the airport does not fit the airline's operational plan.

McKinney National Airport, about 30 miles north of downtown Dallas, was originally a general aviation airport. In 2025 the city approved a $72 million commercial passenger terminal, built on the airport's east side with four gates, and the airport is set to welcome commercial passengers from mid-November, becoming Texas's newest commercial airport in more than 20 years.

Southwest currently operates more than 200 daily flights and over six million passengers a year from Dallas Love Field, and has no operations at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Jordan said demand at Love Field already outpaces the airport's current footprint.

For the foreseeable future, McKinney's only commercial operator will be Avelo Airlines, which begins service on November 11 with a first flight to Fort Myers and plans 11 leisure-market routes. The airport will serve as an alternative gateway for travelers in Dallas's northern suburbs.
