Xiao Liu Congee Closes Its Fremont Store: a Taiwanese Taste of Home Says Goodbye to the East Bay

Fremont, Alameda County, California: Xiao Liu Congee, a Taiwanese congee and home-style small-dishes restaurant long familiar to the East Bay Chinese community, served its last day in Fremont on October 31 before closing for good.
The restaurant, at 34137 Fremont Boulevard, had accompanied the East Bay community for years, and its congee and home-style dishes were, for many Bay Area Chinese families, a taste of home. In its final week, regulars came in to pack up one last meal; one customer took home 12 dishes at once for a final taste.
The Fremont closure is not the end of the flavor: the restaurant's Cupertino and Milpitas locations remain open as usual.
Fremont is one of the East Bay cities with a large Chinese population, and the farewell of a neighborhood Taiwanese eatery closes a chapter of street-corner memory for several generations of diners.
