Honolulu's Chinese Community to Mark Sun Yat-sen's 160th Birthday: Walking Tour, Lei-Draping, Mural Unveiling and Banquet in One Day

Honolulu, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii: Hawaii's Chinese community will commemorate the 160th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birth on Sunday, November 1, with a historical walking tour, a lei-draping ceremony, a mural unveiling and an anniversary banquet, hosted by the Sun Yat-sen Hawaii Foundation.
Sun Yat-sen studied and lived in Honolulu in his early years, and the city was an important starting point of his revolutionary career. The foundation says the commemoration honors the revolutionary leader and founder of modern China.
A report from Honolulu in the South China Morning Post on October 11 noted that most of the buildings Sun knew in Honolulu have disappeared, but descendants of the families who funded his cause are still guarding that legacy.
The November 1 events combine the walking tour with the lei-draping, mural unveiling and banquet, opening a window for the Hawaii Chinese community and the public alike to revisit Sun Yat-sen's ties to Hawaii. The City and County of Honolulu has also partnered with Zhongshan City on a 'Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Hawaii' youth painting exhibition for Hawaii students in grades 6 through 12, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sun's passing.
