Buford Woman Convicted in Computer-Support Scam Targeting Seniors Involving up to $1 Million

Buford, Gwinnett County, Georgia — A jury has convicted Fataoumata Keita, 48, of racketeering in a computer tech-support scam targeting seniors that took as much as $1 million from dozens of victims. The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office announced the conviction on October 30, and Keita is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
According to the district attorney's office, the scheme used computer pop-up warnings claiming a device had a virus and directing users to call a telephone number; people posing as support representatives then sold unnecessary software or assistance and instructed victims to mail checks to a Buford post-office box, with some checks exceeding $1,500.
Gwinnett County is a populous county in the Atlanta metropolitan area, and the conviction was announced publicly by the county district attorney's office.
