Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Society · GSM News

Washington, District of Columbia — Mayor Muriel Bowser on October 31 urged residents to help keep trick-or-treaters and teenagers safe and invited families to free, family-friendly Halloween events in all eight wards. Several District agencies are hosting events, including the Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Library, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement.

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice deployed Halloween Safety Go Teams at 15 locations across the District from 6 p.m. on October 31 to 1 a.m.; team members are non-law-enforcement staff who engage with families, monitor situations and de-escalate conflicts. The police department also issued Halloween weekend safety tips.

DC Public Library events on October 31 included an "All About Bats in the District" professor talk at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library from 1 to 2 p.m., a District horror short-film showcase at the Northeast Neighborhood Library from 3 to 6 p.m., and trick-or-treating at the Petworth and Lamond-Riggs libraries from 3 to 5 p.m. The city noted that many children would be out trick-or-treating that evening and urged drivers and residents to stay alert.
