'Goonies' Star Martha Plimpton Says Long-Rumored Sequel Is 'Never Gonna Happen'
Fans of the classic adventure film "The Goonies" may be out of luck: Martha Plimpton, who played Stef Steinbrenner in the 1985 movie, told Page Six in an exclusive interview that the long-rumored sequel, "The Goonies 2," is "never gonna happen."
Plimpton, 55, spoke to Page Six while promoting Season 2 of FX's "The Lowdown." "I hear something, and then nothing," she said. "And then every single person wants to know, and I hear the same answer. It's nothing."
Released in 1985 and based on a story by Steven Spielberg, "The Goonies" followed a group of kids on a treasure hunt. Plimpton was 14 when the film came out; her fellow cast members included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan.
Talk of a sequel has flared repeatedly over the years. During a 2020 virtual cast reunion hosted by Josh Gad, Spielberg said there had been "a lot of conversations" about a follow-up: "Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn't hold water," adding that the team had never found an idea better than the original.
In February 2025, Variety reported that a sequel was in the works, with Spielberg producing. Writer Potsy Ponciroli told fans at that year's Venice Film Festival that he had turned in a "well-received" first draft and things were "moving in the right direction." Quan said he "would love for it to happen," Feldman said there was still hope, and Josh Brolin told Entertainment Tonight in August 2025 that the experience had been so great he hoped it would happen, while admitting "trepidation" about tainting the memory and joking that the cast would all be using walkers in a sequel.
There have been no further updates since, and Plimpton's comments are the clearest dismissal of the sequel's prospects yet from a member of the cast.
