Gary Locke Endorses Connie Chan as San Francisco Congressional Race Enters Final Stretch Focused on Chinese American Voters

SAN FRANCISCO — In the final stretch before the November 3 vote, former U.S. Commerce Secretary and former Ambassador to China Gary Locke has endorsed San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan for the U.S. House of Representatives. Local English-language outlet Mission Local reported on October 30 that Chan's campaign also announced the endorsement of Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, whose name appears on the endorsement list published on Chan's campaign website.
Chan and California State Senator Scott Wiener are contesting the seat left by the retirement of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in California's 11th Congressional District, which covers most of San Francisco. The two finished at the top of the June 2 primary and face each other in the November 3 runoff. Pelosi endorsed Chan in May.
The South China Morning Post reported on October 31 that Chan was born in Hong Kong, schooled in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States at age 13. If elected, she would become the first Asian American to represent San Francisco in Congress. Chan has served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors since 2021, representing the Richmond District area; Wiener has served in the California State Senate since 2016, after serving on the Board of Supervisors.
In the final days, both campaigns have stepped up outreach to Chinese American voters. Mission Local reported that Wiener held a Chinese-language media briefing and that his team said it had been telephoning voters who requested Chinese-language ballots, while Chan has taken part in Chinese-language media interviews and get-out-the-vote events in Chinatown.
