Canada's Carney: Prepared to Wait for a New U.S. President if No Acceptable Trade Deal Can Be Reached With Trump

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · World · GSM News

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an interview with POLITICO in Montreal, Quebec, on October 30 that if Canada cannot negotiate an acceptable trade agreement with the Trump administration, his government is prepared to wait for a new American president to close the deal.

“We'll have to, if that's what it takes,” Carney said. “And American families, American businesses, will also lose out because of that. They're not winners in this circumstance.” Carney made the remarks upon the conclusion of a summit in Montreal with European Union officials. POLITICO described them as the most direct brushback to Washington in months from a leader who has calibrated his public comments on the United States amid sensitive trade talks.

Carney also said Canadians were growing tired of diplomatic provocations from the United States and described the Trump administration's shifting policies regarding Russia's war in Ukraine as “unhelpful.”

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have made little progress since Canada walked away from talks in August, with both sides imposing new tariffs this fall. Carney reiterated that he would not strike a deal “just for the sake of it.” The White House did not immediately respond to POLITICO's request for comment.
