Día de los Muertos in LA's District 15 on November 1: Free Events at Angels Gate Park and in Harbor City

Los Angeles City Council District 15 (the One-Five), in Los Angeles County, California, will mark Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 1. Councilmember Tim McOsker's office issued a community newsletter on October 31 introducing two November 1 celebrations in the district and reminding residents to stay safe on Halloween night.

At Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, a "Bell-O-Ween" event will be held beneath the Korean Bell on November 1 from 12 to 4 p.m. The free, family-friendly event features face painting, children's crafts, live music and a Día de los Muertos altar (ofrenda), with a costume contest from 2 to 3 p.m.

In Harbor City, the 3rd Annual Día de los Muertos celebration takes place on November 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. on Belle Porte Avenue between 251st and 253rd Streets, rain or shine. McOsker's office said the afternoon will be filled with community, culture, music and activities.

Día de los Muertos honors the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. Through ofrendas filled with photographs, marigolds and meaningful mementos, families keep their loved ones' stories alive across generations. McOsker wrote that the celebrations across the One-Five reflect the rich cultural heritage of its communities, and wished residents a safe and happy Halloween and a meaningful Día de los Muertos.

Celebrations have already filled the past week in the district: a Halloween costume contest at Banning Park, a Día de los Muertos celebration in Watts hosted by the East Side Bike Riders Club, the annual Día de los Muertos Festival in Downtown San Pedro, and a first-ever Trunk-or-Treat on Gardena Boulevard hosted by McOsker's office, the Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council and the Boys and Girls Club.

For Halloween night, the office advised that costumes should allow children to see and move easily, and that families bring a flashlight or glow sticks to stay visible, use sidewalks and crosswalks, travel with a buddy or trusted adult, and check treats before eating them. Drivers were asked to slow down, stay alert and watch carefully for children crossing the street.
