WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of War on October 31 released a short film on its official video channel, "President Trump Tasked the Department of War with Securing our Southern Border — WE DELIVERED," reviewing the military's southern border mission in the force's own footage. "On Day One, President Trump tasked the Department of War with securing our southern border. We delivered," the department wrote in the video's description.

The film compiles footage of soldiers patrolling along the border wall, welding and reinforcing barriers, carrying concertina wire, operating drones and surveillance equipment, and helicopters delivering troops and vehicles. On-screen text reads "ZERO ILLEGAL CROSSINGS" and "DEFENSE OF THE HOMELAND," calling defense of the homeland the department's number one priority.

The mission is carried out by Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB), established on March 14, 2025, under U.S. Northern Command, supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security along roughly 1,954 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. According to the Department of War, more than 20,000 service members have deployed to the border since March 2025, conducting more than 33,000 enhanced detection and monitoring missions, including nearly 4,500 joint patrols alongside CBP agents and close to 1,100 joint, mirrored patrols with Mexican partners.

Barrier reinforcement is a centerpiece of the mission. The department says troops have emplaced some 59,000 rolls of concertina wire in what it calls the largest barrier reinforcement in U.S. history, and installed nearly 8,000 signs and more than 3,100 buoys across 656 miles to mark five National Defense Areas. Command of the task force has rotated twice: the 101st Airborne Division assumed authority from the 10th Mountain Division on October 10, 2025, and handed it over to the 1st Armored Division on May 29, 2026.
