Oregon Marks 50th National Weatherization Day: 1,141 Homes Weatherized Last Year, Saving an Average of $372 a Year

Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) announced on October 29 that October 30 is recognized as Weatherization Day in Oregon under a proclamation by Governor Tina Kotek, marking the 50th National Weatherization Day and five decades of helping households cut energy bills.

The federal Weatherization Assistance Program, operating since 1979, is delivered in Oregon through community action agencies in all 36 counties. Crews insulate homes, seal air leaks and repair or replace inefficient heating systems for income-eligible households, lowering bills while making homes safer in extreme weather.

In 2025, the program weatherized 1,141 Oregon homes, and OHCS estimates participating households save about $372 a year on energy costs. OHCS Executive Director Andrea Bell said weatherization is among the most direct housing investments the state makes, since every dollar saved on utilities stays in a family's budget. Hector Guzman, who leads the weatherization program at the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency, said the work is especially meaningful for seniors and families with young children in older housing.

OHCS says eligible households can apply through their local community action agency. With winter approaching, the agency is urging residents of drafty or hard-to-heat homes to check eligibility early, as waiting lists can form during the cold months.
