Cambodia Opens 2026-2027 School Year: PM Hun Manet Pledges Continued Education Reforms

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on November 1 officially marked the opening of the 2026-2027 academic year, reaffirming the Royal Government's commitment to strengthening education quality and developing human capital across the country, the Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) reported. In a congratulatory message, the prime minister extended his appreciation and congratulations to teachers and students nationwide, describing the start of the new academic year as an important milestone, particularly for young children entering school for the first time and students advancing to new grades.
Hun Manet emphasised that the Royal Government has consistently regarded people as an indispensable resource and placed strong emphasis on human capital development, focusing on knowledge, skills, morality, discipline and health to enable citizens to adapt to social and technological changes.
He called for schools to operate as efficient and accountable public service institutions, with greater attention to strengthening students' knowledge, discipline, morality and behaviour, and underscored the importance of child nutrition programmes and food quality inspections in schools.
He further encouraged parents, guardians and communities to participate actively in education, stressing that schools at all levels should be developed in line with five standards: student learning outcomes; teaching and learning; community participation; school operations and administration; and school accountability.
Hun Manet also praised the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, education personnel and teachers for their sustained reform efforts, highlighting results in recent regional and international assessments, including the Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM 2024) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2025), as evidence of progress in Cambodia's education sector.
