Patriots Rookie Jacas Fined $8,744 for Late Hit on Bears Quarterback

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

On November 1, the National Football League issued its punishment in the matter of Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams taking a late hit in a game against the New England Patriots: Patriots rookie outside linebacker Gabe Jacas was fined $8,744. The play occurred in the second quarter, on the Bears' final drive before halftime: on second-and-11, Williams connected with wide receiver Luther Burden for a 22-yard gain, and Jacas hit him after the throw, drawing a roughing-the-passer penalty of 15 yards on the spot.

After review, the league determined the hit warranted a fine, in an amount below the standard $11,941 fine for late hits. Williams had missed three games with a hamstring tear; since returning he has led the Bears to consecutive wins over the Atlanta Falcons and the Patriots, throwing five touchdown passes against just one interception, and the Bears stand at 5–2. The Bears' next game is against the Seattle Seahawks, a key matchup for both teams this season.
