Indiana Governor Orders Faster Utility Rate-Cut Reviews as Two Utilities Plan More Than $116 Million in Relief

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 1, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun directed the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to speed up its review of rate-reduction requests filed by utility companies, so that energy bills for households across the state fall sooner. The governor's office said the move is part of his push for energy affordability, aimed at getting already-announced rate cuts onto residents' bills as early as possible.

Indiana Michigan Power cut its rates twice in the first half of 2026 and announced on August 26 that it plans to save customers about another $59 million in 2027. Northern Indiana Public Service Company announced on October 28 that it plans to return $57.5 million in new revenue generated by data center growth directly to existing electricity customers. In his directive, Braun asked the commission to prioritize applications that directly reduce household burdens.

The state said that as new demand from data centers and other growth brings in additional revenue, further relief on residential rates is possible, though the size and timing of any cuts still require case-by-case approval by the commission.
