Winter Storm Watch for the Bighorn Mountains: Up to 8 Inches of Snow, 50 MPH Gusts

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 1, the National Weather Service office in Billings issued a winter storm watch for the Pryor area and the northern Bighorn Mountains in Big Horn County, Montana, in effect from Sunday evening, November 1, through Monday evening, November 2. Moderate to heavy snow is possible in the mountains, with totals up to 8 inches, wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, and blowing snow that could drop visibility below a quarter mile. The northeastern Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming are included in the same watch area.

Forecasters warned that mountain roads may see snow and ice, and that drivers should take extra care at night and during the Monday morning commute, allow plenty of travel time, and follow real-time road updates. A winter storm watch means hazardous weather is possible but has not yet reached the certainty of a winter storm warning, and the forecast may still change with shifting air currents.

Northern Rocky Mountain areas in Montana are entering their snowy season in early November. Mountain residents and through drivers should check vehicle traction equipment, warm clothing and emergency supplies in advance, and avoid crossing passes when visibility is extremely low. The National Weather Service will keep updating snowfall and wind forecasts from the latest observations, and the public can check hourly forecasts through official channels.
