Winter Storm Warning in Northeastern Nevada: Up to 16 Inches at High Elevations

On November 1, the National Weather Service office in Elko issued a winter storm warning for the mountains around Elko, Elko County, Nevada, in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday night. Snowfall of 12 to 16 inches is forecast above 7,500 feet, and 8 to 12 inches between 6,500 and 7,500 feet.
The routes named in the forecast include State Route 229 through Secret Pass, the upper Lamoille Canyon area and Harrison Pass, where snow-covered roads are expected. Forecasters urged drivers to guard against snow, ice and reduced visibility in the mountains, and noted that the first Sunday night after daylight saving time ends on November 1 calls for extra attention to drowsy driving.
The same round of western winter weather also affects northwestern Colorado and the San Juan Mountains in the southwest of that state above 10,000 feet, where 12 to 18 inches of snow and gusts up to 45 mph are forecast through noon on Monday, November 2. All of these figures are forecast values, not measured totals, and the elevation bands matter for travel planning: low-elevation routes may see far less snow than the high country. Drivers planning to cross northeastern Nevada's passes on Sunday night or Monday morning should check the National Weather Service's latest warnings and road closure information in advance.
