North Dakota Seat Belt Crackdown Begins; 52% of Fatal-Crash Victims Were Unbelted

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 1, North Dakota's "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign began statewide, running through December 15. Law enforcement agencies across the state will step up patrols during holiday travel and winter driving, focusing on drivers and passengers who do not wear seat belts. The state Vision Zero program and law enforcement announced the effort on October 27, reminding drivers to buckle up in every seat, on every trip.

Officials said that so far in 2026, 52% of the people killed in fatal crashes in the state where a seat belt was available were not wearing one. The Morton County sheriff said a seat belt only works if it is worn, and urged drivers to make buckling up the first habit after getting in the car.

The state transportation department maintains more than 8,500 miles of roads and 4,900 bridges statewide, and the campaign is part of its winter road safety work. With the Thanksgiving and Christmas travel peaks approaching, law enforcement reminded families on long trips to stay buckled the whole way, and not to relax the habit at night or on rural roads.
