Follow-Up: Russia Detains Teen Suspected of Plotting Moscow Museum Attack, FSB Thanks U.S. for Tip-Off

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on November 1 that, acting on information provided by U.S. law enforcement, Russian authorities have detained a minor Russian citizen suspected of plotting a terrorist attack at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in Moscow. The FSB said in its statement that it was grateful to the U.S. side for the information provided.
According to the FSB, the teenager had posted images on TikTok of himself wearing tactical clothing and holding an object resembling an automatic weapon, along with photos taken at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve captioned 'I found a place.' The FSB said he subscribed to a neo-Nazi channel on Telegram and had made a significant number of search queries about past terrorist acts and mass murders, and that airsoft weapons were found at his home.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow had issued a security alert on Saturday, October 31, saying it was aware of a credible threat of a mass casualty event that day at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve and that the U.S. government was coordinating with Russian authorities on a response. GSM reported that alert and the museum's temporary closure on October 31; the detention is the latest development in the case. The U.S. State Department has a long-standing 'duty to warn' policy requiring it to alert American communities abroad to such threats.
It is not the first time Washington has passed attack intelligence to Moscow: in 2017 the U.S. warned Russia about a planned attack on Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, and President Vladimir Putin personally thanked President Donald Trump. In March 2024, by contrast, Putin dismissed a U.S. embassy warning about ISIS plans to target large gatherings in Moscow as a provocation, days before gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall venue and killed more than 140 people in an attack claimed by ISIS.
